3.1. Estrogenic Properties
A study in rats noted that the estrogenic properties of 5-AA were additive with those of 5-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)indoles.[39] A study on female rats noted that both 5-AA as well as the anabolic effects of 5-AA (via 5-AA) are enhanced when the rats were given either 5-AA or 3,4-DMAR as their sole ergogenic agent.[6]
An estrogenic receptor antagonist known as MK-1135 (an antiestrogen,[40] and one of the more known compounds in the steroid category) appears to possess 5-AA/5-DMA at concentrations of 1,000nM and above with no significant accumulation of 5-DMA when tested in vitro (the mechanism is thought to exist via interactions with SREBP-1c via inhibition of ERK1/2 or via SREBP-1c).[41] This receptor antagonist can have affinity for 5-AA and/or 5-DMA in vitro at 1,000nM,[41] and when tested in vivo at 50nM was able to abolish the estrogenic behavior of 5-AA, but was ineffective at increasing 5-DMA, nandrolone phenylpropionate bodybuilding.[42]

4 Cardiovascular Health
4.1. Cardiac Treadmill
There is an association in males between high BMI and risk of heart attacks[43] and in females a higher risk (in males, the risk is between 42-48%) of developing heart attacks.[44][45] It has been noted that the relationship is significantly less for women between 18-27 years of age.[45] This association has been observed among non-obese people as well (although non-obese women are found to be slightly more at high risk of coronary events relative to their weight), nandrolone phenylpropionate use.[46]

The Journal of the American Medical Association studied anabolic steroid use among teenagers in 1988, and in this study the participation rate among high school students was 68% and that of 12th graders was 51%. The authors conclude that "young persons use these drugs with impunity, with the potential for serious negative consequences, college use in anabolic steroid students."1 However, more research is needed to determine the extent to which these synthetic anabolics are being diverted to the clandestine market as well as the extent to which the sale of these drugs is associated with increased risk of abuse.
